The Importance of Responsive Design for Non-Profit Organizations

on February 10, 2015

Several of the clients that we work with at Left + Right are national or regional non-profit organizations. We pride ourselves on building "good things" for organizations that "do good" in their communities and in the world. A pervasive problem for non-profit organizations is to find ways to engage an audience of working professionals that have limited time during the day to be thinking philanthropically. While we are able to formulate customized solutions for our clients, often one of our first suggestions is to make sure that client websites are "responsive".

Responsive web design is a way of building a website so it responds to the available screen space. Instead of a fixed width that is targeted to a desktop computer, the layout is flexible and fluid to work on all devices. (To learn more, check out this example: http://johnpolacek.github.io/scrolldeck.js/decks/responsive/)

You would think that in 2014 with the proliferation of smart phones and tablets that all websites would be responsive, but that is far from the case. However, a rough estimate suggests that only 11% of websites are responsive. http://www.guypo.com/mobile/rwd-ratio-in-top-100000-websites-refined/

A website that is responsive will help drive engagement with your audience by making your content more accessible. In March of 2013, Google and Nielsen released a study that analyzed over 6,000 mobile searches. Some of the key findings from the study were:

  • 77% of mobile searches take place in a location where users have access to a PC. (ie…we use mobile because it is convenient!)
  • 3 of 4 mobile searches trigger a follow up action
  • 55% of conversions from mobile search happen within the hour

To engage with your audience, and to further the good work you are doing in the world consider responsive web design. For examples of our responsive websites, visit: http://leftplusright.com/
